The Truth About Equity: Why Intentions Aren’t Enough with Celeste Warren

Equity is one of the most talked-about concepts in leadership today—and one of the most misunderstood.

In a recent episode of The Cultural Curriculum Chat™ Podcast, I sat down with Celeste Warren, a former Fortune 100 Vice President and Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer turned consultant, nonprofit founder, and author of The Truth About Equity.

Our conversation went beyond surface-level DEI language and into what equity actually demands of leaders, organizations, and systems.

Equity Is Not a Statement—It’s a System

One of the most powerful takeaways from our discussion was this:
Equity cannot live in mission statements alone.

Celeste shared that many organizations are willing to invest in training, branding, and public commitments—but hesitate when equity requires redistributing power, resources, or access. Real equity asks leaders to examine who benefits from existing systems and who has been consistently excluded.

From Corporate Leadership to Consulting with Purpose

After a 28-year career in corporate leadership, Celeste didn’t step away from equity work—she expanded it. Through her consulting practice, she now supports organizations in moving from performative inclusion to sustainable, measurable change.

Outside the workplace, she co-founded Destination STEM, Inc., a nonprofit created with her children to support students of color pursuing STEM degrees. This work recognizes a critical truth: equity must begin long before the hiring process.

Why Truth-Telling Matters in Equity Work

Celeste’s book, The Truth About Equity, challenges leaders to stop avoiding difficult conversations and start addressing the root causes of inequity. It’s written for those who are ready to move past comfort and into accountability.

This episode is a reminder that equity is not about being perfect—it’s about being honest, consistent, and willing to change systems that no longer serve everyone.
