Some stories entertain us. Others transform us.
On this episode of The Cultural Curriculum Chat™ Podcast, I had the honor of speaking with Emmy-winning producer, director, screenwriter, and bestselling author Leif Bristow about the deeply moving journey behind Dancing Through the Shadow.
What makes this story especially powerful is that it is rooted in real lived experiences.
Through a friendship with internationally celebrated dancer and survivor Tia Zhang, Leif and his family came to understand the unimaginable hardships she endured growing up under Mao-era China. Her story of perseverance, identity, oppression, and ultimately freedom became the inspiration behind an award-winning bestselling novel written by Agnes Bristow and an accompanying film project.
During our conversation, Leif shared insights into:
The emotional responsibility of telling true stories
The process of adapting lived experiences into books and film
Why preserving stories across cultures matters
The role storytelling plays in empathy and education
How courage and resilience continue to inspire audiences globally
One of the most meaningful takeaways from this conversation was the reminder that storytelling preserves humanity. Stories allow us to understand perspectives beyond our own and connect across cultures, generations, and experiences.
As educators, creatives, and community leaders, we each have the opportunity to honor stories that deserve to be heard.
This episode is a reminder that resilience can emerge even from unimaginable circumstances and that stories of hope still matter.
