What’s an Inclusive Mindset?

Are you ready to step out of your comfort zone and into a more inclusive mindset?

In my latest episode on the Cultural Curriculum Chat, I go further into what it truly means to have an inclusive mindset and how you can build this important muscle. Here are five actionable steps I shared, which you can use to foster inclusivity in your daily life:

  1. Set Clear Goals

The first step to developing an inclusive mindset is setting clear, intentional goals. This could be as simple as making a point to support a BIPOC-owned business, engaging with a neighbor from a different background, or advocating for a more inclusive workplace. Setting these goals helps you stay focused and committed to making a positive impact.

  1. Take Small Steps

Don’t overwhelm yourself by trying to change everything at once. Small, consistent actions can lead to significant change over time. This might mean organizing casual, agenda-free meetings at work to build camaraderie or setting up simple activities like a cornhole tournament to encourage team bonding. These small steps help create a more inclusive environment where everyone feels valued.

  1. Hold Yourself Accountable

We all make mistakes, but it’s crucial to own up to them and learn from them. If you misstep, apologize sincerely and commit to doing better. Accountability is key in building trust and fostering a supportive community. Remember, it’s not about being perfect; it’s about being committed to growth and improvement.

  1. Learn from Failures

Every failure is an opportunity to learn and improve. If your efforts to promote diversity and inclusion haven’t gone as planned, take the time to understand why. Conduct exit interviews, survey your team, and audit your environment to identify areas for improvement. Use these insights to make meaningful changes and create a more inclusive atmosphere.

  1. Celebrate Wins

Don’t forget to celebrate your successes, no matter how small. Whether it’s building a new friendship, successfully implementing an inclusive initiative at work, or simply having a meaningful conversation with someone from a different background, every win counts. Celebrating these moments keeps you motivated and reinforces the importance of your efforts.

By incorporating these steps into your daily routine, you’ll be well on your way to developing an inclusive mindset. It’s all about being intentional, taking action, and continuously learning and growing. Remember, inclusivity is a journey, not a destination.
